NYC Now and Again Soon
NYC kind of holds a special place in our lives, as it's where BK proposed. Cherry Hill in Central Park to be exact. I know what you're thinking- everyone else told him he started out way too big too. He's good like that. He's lived up to the hype too- got married in Maui, moved to Switzerland...the travel and the stories continue.
Even though NYC is special to us, it's not somewhere we typically frequent. But to be honest, we really don't frequent very many places, as we like to explore new places. So when the opportunity presented itself to have a weekend in NYC, woohoo- we're there! BK had to work in New Jersey from a Thursday to a Wednesday, and obviously I didn't want him to have to be there by himself, so I hopped on a plane on Friday afternoon and headed for the city.
Let me just start with one thing. It is ridiculously cold in February in New York. As in, it was 20* when I got there, with a wind chill of 9*. Luckily, that whole Swiss living thing taught me all about layering and how to dress for the cold. Always remember- no bad weather, only bad clothing.
My least favorite part of virtually any trip is the commute from the airport into where ever we are staying. Why, you ask? Mostly because I hate taxis. I think I can actually feel the motion sickness coming on before I even get into one. And it's not just in NYC; it's pretty much everywhere. I would rather take more time and take public transport to wherever I need to get to. It's mostly the jerky driving and need to drive at breakneck speed for 2.5 seconds, only to slam on the breaks and narrowly miss being in an accident. And to be fair, BK, K Bear and I have been in a fender bender in a taxi in Berlin outside of the airport. At which point we then had to walk the rest of the way into the airport and to the terminal.
Here's the part where I like to be a travel blogger and give recommendations and my thoughts on things we did and places we went. We stayed in the Financial District. Not my favorite area of town and also not the most convenient, but for a short weekend, it was fine. We stayed at the Millennium Hilton- also fine. We're in NYC, so I'm not complaining. The view outside was nice; the Oculus was just outside the hotel, which is an interesting building.
Friday night I got there late and BK and I immediately headed out to dinner at De Claudio. It's an Italian place that was not too far from our hotel. My arribata was okay, but BK's steak was really good. I'd recommend it if you need somewhere to go that's easy and doesn't require a huge wait or a crazy far out reservation.
Saturday we slept a little late- 9a.m.- you know, being parents and all. Then headed to grab breakfast and go to the 9/11 Memorial. I would highly recommend this; it reminded me of the Hiroshima Peace Memorial. Download the app before you go, as it takes a while to download and they won't let you buy headphones until they can check the app. OR bring your own headphones. But, the memorial is really well done, and incorporates a number of structural pieces from the buildings into the memorial. It's haunting. There are numerous broadcasts and radio transmissions of when the buildings came down and the museum is full of artifacts of the day it happened- from shoes people wore to identification of people who passed to a crushed fire truck destroyed when one of the towers came down. So well done. Something everyone should see and something no one should forget.
After the memorial we met some friends at the TCU Basketball watch party, at which we were the only ones there (besides the Tech fans we were meeting). Then that night went to see Book of Mormon. Great play, probably really offensive to some, but really funny to others. I would recommend it for some, probably not for others. Somewhere in between all of that BK and I grabbed a quick bite to eat at DB Bistro Moderne- great food and an excellent bar and bartender. It looked really busy, but we got there before the show and ate at the bar, which worked out well for us.
Our weekend was short, just a Friday night until Sunday. Sunday morning we slept late again (see above re 9am) then went to brunch. We walked a couple of blocks to TriBeCa and specifically to Tribeca's Kitchen. This is a great spot; laid back, great service, good food, really convenient to the Financial District.
And that's about it. After brunch I headed to the airport and back home to the babes who had been floating between Cookie/Monkey and Mimi/PopPop. We're headed back to NYC this week after our sweet girl's birthday and they'll be making the same rounds. This time we're headed up for my birthday and for a band that we really like seeing.
Good times. Back soon for more!
